Efficiency and productivity are essential in the management of this country’s services.
So says Minister of Environment, Dr. Denis Lowe, who was speaking at the recently held Drainage Division’s presentation of awards at the Ministry of Environment’s Hincks Street, St. Michael headquarters.
“We are going to have to adopt principles of efficiency and productivity as we continue to manage the country’s services. Nothing would be sustainable if everything is not done at a level of efficiency. Efficiency not only in terms of financial expenditure, but in terms of managing human resources and ensuring that our human resources deliver what they are capable of doing,” said Minister Lowe.
The minister expressed concern over the behaviours of some people in the execution of their work.
“I believe especially at a time like this when the Barbados economy continues to work its way through a most depressing economic time, that we have to get value for money. It’s the bottom line and therefore I expect everyone … to combine efforts across various enterprises to ensure that we give the very best we can…” he said.
He noted that the effort to extract the highest level of value in service out of workers is not, sometimes, very easy.
“It is a reality in work culture. And therefore, when you recognise that there are those who persistently give of their very best, I think that it is something worth noting, recognising and rewarding,” he said.
Minister Lowe said that he has full confidence in the people who are leading and delivering services in the Drainage Division. He called on workers who are exemplars of good service and work ethic to pass it on.
