Chairman outlines future plans for the BSE

CHAIRMAN of the Barbados Stock Exchange (BSE), Dr. Grenville Phillips has outlined a few of the initiatives the institution is currently pursuing – or looking to do so in the near future. Giving the welcoming remarks at BSE’s 25th Anniversary Lecture and Cocktail Reception, Phillips stated as the organisation’s first initiative, the push to develop an international trading floor which according to him, “is seen as a vital component for the international business sector” in Barbados.

Secondly, he said that the BSE was moving towards the demutualisation of the stock exchange, which “will render it easier to attract capital for its further development; merge amalgamate or otherwise integrate with other exchanges within the region”.

The Chairman of the Exchange, went on to speak about another initiative which was yet in the early stages of discussion, it being: Examining the feasibility of streamlining the requirements for the listing of companies on the Exchanges Junior Market. According Dr. Phillips, this move would “facilitate an ... opportunity for our venture capitalists and angel investors who may have provided equity capital to such enterprises in their developmental state”.

The final initiative highlighted for the evening surrounded the establishment and development of “properly structured investment clubs” at secondary schools and similar grouping which would act as a means to grow awareness of equity investment in the country. Phillips extended a welcoming hand the brokerage community to assist in this venture.
