St. James, Barbados—The Towner Management Group, the largest independent captive and international business company manager in Barbados, announced today that it has sold its Barbados-based business and operations to the Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc (JLT).
The transaction, announced by founding Chairperson Christopher J.N. Towner, will see the company rebranded JLT Towner and will maintain its current headquarters in Barbados, retaining the Towner management team.
Mr. Towner retains an interest in the Burlington, Vermont-based Group’s U.S. activities, which will also be renamed JLT Towner. He will also continue as Chairman of JLT (Barbados).
JLT is an international group of risk specialists and employee benefits consultants employing 7000 people worldwide with a growing presence in Latin America with over 650 employees in the region.
Gateway to South America
"This partnership is truly beneficial for both companies, their clients and employees," said Towner, who built the management company from scratch two decades ago. "JLT understands the value of current tax treaties and business flows enjoyed between Barbados and Latin American countries. Barbados is also an ideal platform for JLT's continued growth in Latin America."
Towner Management was established 21 years ago and is one of the most respected, independent management companies in the Caribbean. Clients and employees are pleased that the new company will be led by current Towner president Ricardo O. Knight, with JLT adding a wider international presence for those clients with multiple operations.
"JLT opened operations in Barbados two years ago," Kilian Whelan, Chief Executive Officer, JLT Insurance Management (Barbados and Bermuda), says, "and since we established our presence we continue to see excellent opportunities in Barbados as a captive domicile. The combination of Towner and JLT combines the established resources of the JLT Group and the fast-growing Towner Group to create an exceptionally strong management team.
"Together, we expect to become an even stronger force in the market, providing clients with enhanced access to international markets, experience and specialty skills built on the firm foundations both companies have for client service and innovation."
Greater Security
"This also creates greater opportunity for the employees and the Towner operations," Towner adds. "Barbados is facing increasingly stiff competition as a leading North American domicile but the combination of new South American markets and JLT's numerous strengths gives us great optimism for the future."
"In the past, Towner Management has told our clients and potential customers that they may count on our experience, independence and expertise to help guide their business," says Towner. "Today, with the breadth of experience and expertise JLT adds, this has never been truer."
